Software Is Becoming an Operating Layer

The next software abstraction is not another dashboard. It is a layer that understands the organization, coordinates capabilities, and exposes the right decisions to people.

The dashboard is probably not the final form of software.

We built dashboards because humans needed somewhere to operate the machine.

What happens when the machine can operate more of itself?

Interfaces follow constraints

The spreadsheet looks the way it does because a human needs to inspect cells.

The CRM looks the way it does because a salesperson needs to update records.

The ad platform looks the way it does because a media buyer needs controls for campaigns, audiences and budgets.

Those interfaces are not natural laws. They are responses to the fact that a person has historically been required at every step.

If software can understand an objective, use tools and maintain context across steps, the interface can move upward.

Instead of configuring every intermediate action, the user specifies intent, constraints and approvals.

That creates a new software layer

I think of it as an operating layer.

Not an operating system in the literal Windows or Linux sense.

A business operating layer: something that knows enough about the organization to route work through capabilities underneath it.

The CRM can remain. The ad network can remain. The database can remain. The specialist model can remain.

But fewer people need to manually coordinate them.

Context is the core asset

This is where a lot of AI products still feel backwards to me.

They start from a blank box.

Every conversation begins by reconstructing the business: what do you sell, who are the customers, what tone should I use, what happened last time, what systems are connected?

That is acceptable for a general-purpose assistant.

It is a poor architecture for operating software.

Operating software should know the durable things and ask about the changing things.

The business identity should persist. Permissions should persist. Customer definitions should persist. Rules and decisions should persist.

Then the AI can spend its attention on what is new.

The interface becomes exceptions

There is an old operations idea that good systems make normal work boring and surface exceptions to people.

I think AI software will move in that direction.

You do not need a notification that the routine task completed exactly as expected.

You need to know that the campaign cost doubled, the customer replied angrily, the model is uncertain, a policy conflicts with the requested action, or an opportunity appears that falls outside the current plan.

Human attention should accumulate around exceptions, not around moving routine work from one status to another.

This is what I am trying to make real in marketing

Marketing is unusually fragmented because the channels grew up separately.

The website, search, paid media, outbound, social, analytics and CRM all became separate software categories.

But the customer does not experience seven categories.

They experience one company.

That is why I think the right abstraction for YG3 is not "AI marketing tool."

It is an operating layer for the marketing function.

The implementation underneath can stay complicated.

The business should not have to feel all of that complexity.

We are still early

Stanford's 2026 AI Index says agent deployment remains early even while AI use across organizations has become widespread.

That makes sense to me.

Adding a chatbot to an old workflow is easier than redesigning the workflow around software that can act.

The interesting companies over the next several years will be the ones willing to do the second thing.

The dashboard will not disappear tomorrow.

But I think its importance will.
